While I appreciate the lengths that the developers went to to breathe life into the world, I personally just wanted to get on with clearing the fantastic levels they had put together. Thankfully, the dialogue before the level can be skipped, but you have to read, or in my case, click through the dialogue at the end of each level. Each level is bookended with bits of dialogue, and I found this to be a bit of a nuisance after just a few levels. An array of characters follow you around Radlandia to cheer you on and perform the role of tour guide for the dozens of levels you will skate through. The same can be extended to the characters who accompany you on the journey they talk a whole lot of nonsense that just didn’t land for me. A world dedicated entirely to skateboarding is a fun idea, but the whole chosen one/skateboarding pantheon angle was too over the top of my personal tastes. There’s a brief introductory cutscene to contextualize this, but if I’m being honest, I found it to be a little cringy. Once in a generation, a skateboarder is chosen to go on a pilgrimage around the world to prove themselves to the Gods, and in doing so, essentially becomes Radlandia’s skateboarding messiah. OlliOlli World takes place in the land of Radlandia, a vibrant, colourful world shaped by the Gods for one purpose and one purpose only: to skate. Before playing OlliOlli World, I had forgotten how much I loved those games growing up, and while OlliOlli World plays completely differently, I’m pleased to say I had a ton of fun with it, and it reminded me of how much enjoyment I used to get from skateboarding games.

Tony Hawk’s Underground and Tony Hawk’s Underground 2 were family favorites growing up, as was Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3, which ended up being my introduction to both skateboarding games and Motörhead alike. Given that, I should preface this review by clearly stating that I am a newcomer to the series, although I have played my fair share of skateboarding games in the past. I also knew they were widely lauded and held in high regard from fans and critics alike, amassing somewhat of a cult following.

I knew that up to this point the OlliOlli series was made up of two 2d skateboarding games that featured pixel graphics, a decent challenge, and a lot of room to pull off tricks, combos, grinds, and so on. Even without them, OlliOlli 2 is a fun game that, in its own way, reaffirms what made the first one such a good time. When I first jumped into OlliOlli World, I was only vaguely familiar with the games that came before it. I would have liked a way to create my own level, customization features, and more interactive levels. In a testament to this, I even had fun going through levels without busting tricks and just trying to survive – and even that isn't easy. Special launch ramps require timing to bridge chasms of death and reach secret areas, and the placement of grindable rails is done for both challenge and their high score possibilities. Regardless of whether you choose to tackle the game's more difficult aspect or not, OlliOlli2 succeeds because the levels – in conjunction with the runner-like platforming flow – are well designed. Even though you can unlock the next stage just by surviving to the end of a level, fulfilling all of the objectives opens up a pro-level stage with all-new environments, and there's also the challenge of the returning RAD difficulty level and Daily Grind and Spots asynchronous online modes. The game goads you by giving you new tricks that make high score seekers out of novice players, while still raising the bar for seasoned trick technicians.

Using manuals to stitch together one single, giant combo through a level is not necessary to unlock the next stage, but your fingers will be itching to do so, along with busting as many tricks as possible in between. As bland as this sounds, the new tricks in conjunction with the level objectives and design create an experience that drills down into the addictiveness of the gameplay even more than the last game. OlliOlli2 fulfills a modicum of sequel objectives: more tricks and levels augment the gameplay foundation of the first title. Nevertheless, this sequel has improved the series in ways I didn't think possible. In fact, there are things I would include on a list of necessities for the franchise that are not in Welcome to Olliwood. They fit in nicely but don't redefine the core experience or shake-up the game's feature set. Manuals and reverts are unsurprising new moves for the fast-paced game. The additions to OlliOlli2 are nothing eye-catching.
